8 Ways Hospital Patients Can Prevent Slip and Falls

8 Ways Hospital Patients Can Prevent Slip and Falls

When we go to the hospital, we worry about a doctor or nurse making a mistake and putting our life at risk. We fear that the doctor will operate on the wrong body part or that we’ll be given the wrong prescription. These types of mistakes happen, but they aren’t the most common. The most common cause of injury to Georgia hospital patients are slip and fall accidents. Injuries from a hospital slip and fall can prolong hospital stays and even cause a reversal of a patient’s condition.
Hospitals must identify patients who are at risk of slip and fall injuries and they must create a fall-prevention plan for those patients. Patients can also help prevent slip and fall injuries. Our Atlanta personal injury lawyers have created this list of eight things patients can do to reduce the risk of a hospital slip and fall:

  1. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. Use your call button whenever you need to. Don’t wait until your situation becomes urgent.
  2. Ask for help if you need to get out of bed to use the bathroom. This is especially important if the room is dark or if you are attached to an IV line.
  3. If you have to move around at night, make sure there is enough light to see.
  4. Keep your glasses near you, so you can put them on before getting out of bed.
  5. Don’t climb over the bed rails.
  6. If you use a wheelchair or walker, make sure the wheels are locked when you get in and out.
  7. Paper shoes and hospital socks are slippery. Wear slippers or shoes with non-slip soles. Ask a family member to bring these from home.
  8. Let a staff member know if you see spilled fluids or objects on the floor. These should be cleaned up so they don’t pose a fall hazard.
