Automakers Intend to Make AEB Standard

Automakers Intend to Make AEB Standard

In an effort to make automatic emergency braking systems accessible to everyone, ten car manufacturers have recently announced they will install automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems in all of their new vehicles. Ford, General Motors, Audi, Mazda, BMW, Toyota, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volvo will work with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to sort out the details of the implementation, and also determine a timeline.
This major news was released in September of 2015, at an announcement in which U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx discussed how the potentially life-saving feature is usually only available in more expensive vehicles, meaning that many American drivers are without the system. Installing AEB into more affordable vehicles means that the system is more accessible, and focuses on preventing accidents in addition to protecting those who are involved in them.

The ABCs of AEBs

Becoming distracted, groggy, or just not focused can happen to even the best drivers and sometimes accidents can occur as a result. Automatic Emergency Braking systems are designed to be there when drivers fail. AEBs are designed to:

  • Prevent rear-end accidents. Although this braking system is intended to prevent all kinds of accidents from occurring, it is especially helpful in stopping rear-end accidents, which often result from a driver failing to hit the brakes in time to avoid colliding into someone in front of him.
  • Detect potential dangers. On-vehicle sensors, including lasers, radars, and cameras, detect when a crash is imminent. The system will then alert the driver of the potentially dangerous situation and will ultimately engage the braking system if the driver doesn’t do it himself.

AEB Can’t Prevent Every Accident

As effective as the automatic emergency braking system is, it can’t prevent every accident from occurring. If another driver causes you to become injured, you may be entitled to compensation.
