According to a newly released report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), elderly pedestrians are nearly twice as likely to die in pedestrian accidents involving cars as their younger counterparts. In the report, the CDC analyzed ten years of data (from 2001 – 2010) that focused on motor vehicle traffic-related pedestrian deaths.
In 2010 alone, pedestrian deaths accounted for 13% of the 33,687 deaths from automobile accidents. To help shed light on the groups who were at risk for these dangerous pedestrian accidents, the CDC analyzed the data by age group, ethnicity, sex, and urbanization. By analyzing the data in this manner, the CDC was able to determine that accidents involving those over the age of 75 were more likely to result in death than those involving individuals 34 and under.
The reasoning behind this was that those over the age of 75 have “higher prevalence of chronic disease, disability, and frailty” that contributes to the higher fatality rate. The report also inferred that age-related declines in cognitive functioning, vision, and physical functioning might increase the risk of being struck by a vehicle.
The report further suggested that the number of pedestrian deaths could increase as the elderly U.S. population increases. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that within the next three decades, the population of people over the age of 75 will more than double—from approximately 18 million in 2011 to 44 million in 2040. The report stresses the need to consider the needs of elderly pedestrians by upgrading or installing crosswalks and sidewalks, installing speed bumps, and enforcing speeding, distracted driving, and pedestrian right-of-way laws.
