"Decide to Drive" Campaign Hopes to Eliminate Distracted Driving

For many, the carefree days of summer are a time to relax and unwind. However, summer can be a dangerous time for teenage drivers. In a recent news release by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Automobile Association (AAA), seven of the ten deadliest days for teen drivers occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The study concluded that distracted driving is a major factor in these dangerous and potentially deadly car accidents.
Teenage distracted driving behavior has exploded recently. According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers are more than three times as likely to get in a car accident while reaching for something and 23 times more likely to be in a crash while texting. Based on this striking data, the AAOS and AAA partnered to sponsor the “Decide to Drive” campaign to urge teens to stay focused while behind the wheel.
The “Decide to Drive” campaign offers a “Wreck-less Checklist” for both teens and adults to help them eliminate distractions before they head out on the road. The checklist includes the following steps for preparing to drive:

  • Put on glasses, sunglasses and other necessary accessories
  • Adjust seats, mirrors, controls, and headrests
  • Put on seat belt
  • Move reading material from arms-reach
  • Pre-load CD, radio or music playlists and set the volume to a level that won’t drown out the sound of an emergency vehicle
  • Enter destination into navigation system

Once you are behind the wheel, stay focused on the road. If you need to eat, drink, make a call, text, or do anything that could distract your focus from driving, find a safe place to pull over and complete that task before continuing on your way.
