Distracted Driving Claims Two Young Lives in Georgia

Distracted Driving Claims Two Young Lives in Georgia

With today’s mobile society, the issue of distracted driving continues to grow. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of people injured in an accident caused by distracted driving rose by at least 9 percent in just one year, from 2011 to 2012. We do not have to look far to see evidence of this growth. Sadly, these accidents happen right here in our backyard.

On Wednesday, May 28, students at a Cherokee County high school held a vigil in memory of two young people tragically killed in a distracted driving accident. Shania “Lucy” Boettcher, 18, and Darius Valcarcel, 22, both of Woodstock, died on May 27 when a Ford Explorer overturned near the Chamblee-Dunwoody exit. Ms. Boettcher was scheduled to graduate from Etowah High School on Friday, while Valcarcel graduated from the school in 2010.

According to police, the Explorer did not crash as a result of striking another vehicle or due to objects in the road. Witnesses reported that the car had swerved before rolling over several times, finally coming to a rest near North Peachtree Road. The investigation later revealed that the driver of the car was distracted by a passenger, causing her to lose control. She over-corrected and the car rolled over several times as a result.

Eight Causes of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving comes in many forms. The following are eight examples:

  1. Talking on a cell phone
  2. Texting on a cell phone
  3. Adjusting the radio
  4. Using a navigational system
  5. Eating or drinking
  6. Passing food, toys, or other items to other passengers
  7. Turning to check on a child riding in the backseat
  8. Talking to other passengers
