Does the GM Ignition Switch Recall Affect Your Safety?

Does the GM Ignition Switch Recall Affect Your Safety?

Do you drive a GM car? General Motors has recalled more than 1,300,000 vehicles from the model years 2003–2007. These cars have a defect that could prevent the airbags from deploying in a car crash. At least 12 deaths have been blamed on the vehicle defect.

Vehicles Included in the GM Recall

  • 2005–2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Pontiac Pursuit (sold only in Canada)
  • 2003–2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2006–2007 Chevrolet HHR
  • 2006–2007 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2007 Saturn Sky models

These vehicles have a defect in the ignition switch. The defect may allow the key to unintentionally move into the “accessory” or “off” position. This is most likely to occur if the driver’s key ring is carrying extra weight or if the vehicle is suddenly jarred—as in an accident.
When the ignition is moved to “accessory” or “off”, the engine and most of the electrical components on the vehicle will shut down. This can result in the airbags not deploying in a crash, thereby increasing the risk for occupant injury.
GM has acknowledged 12 deaths caused by the faulty ignition switch, but the NHTSA’s database of fatal crashes shows that there may be hundreds more victims. Friedman Research Corporation—an independent company that evaluates vehicle design and safety—analyzed the database and found more than 300 accidents involving the 2005–07 Chevrolet Cobalt and the 2003–07 Saturn Ion, in which air bags did not deploy.
If you own one of the recalled vehicles, take your car key off your key ring to prevent extra weight from moving the ignition switch and contact your GM dealer immediately. The dealer will replace the ignition at no charge.
