Five Things to Do After a Car Fire

Five Things to Do After a Car Fire

On January 17, 2014, the Loews Hotel building and the PWC Building in Midtown Atlanta were evacuated after a car in the parking garage caught on fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but several vehicles were burned.
Each year, more than 260,000 vehicles burst into flame. Do you know what to do if your car catches on fire? Here are some safety tips from the car accident attorneys at Kaufman Law:

  1. Pull over – If you see smoke, smell something burning, or suspect a fire, pull over. If you continue driving, the moving air will add fuel to the fire. Try to stop in a safe place away from other people, vehicles and buildings.
  2. Don’t panic – Staying calm will help you stay safe.
  3. Get out – Get yourself and your passengers out of the car. Move away from the smoke.
  4. Get away – Move as far away from the vehicle as possible. This is extremely important if the smoke is coming from the rear of the vehicle near the gas tank.
  5. Call 911 – Let the dispatcher know that the car may be on fire.

It is not usually a good idea to try to put out the fire on your own. Your car may be valuable, but your life is worth a lot more than your car. However, if the fire is small and inside the passenger compartment, you can try smothering the fire by closing all the doors and windows. You can also try using an ABC fire extinguisher—but be careful.
If the smoke is coming from under the hood, try popping the release for the hood, but don’t open it. Stand as far away from the vehicle as possible and aim the extinguisher through the gap between the hood and the vehicle.
