A collision between a tour bus and a tractor-trailer in Gilmer County has resulted in one death and 43 injuries. The accident happened on Highway 515 at Whitestone Road near Ellijay, GA. According to Georgia State Patrol troopers, the tractor-trailer was attempting to turn left into the southbound lanes of the highway, but was forced to stop in the northbound lanes because of oncoming traffic. The tour bus then collided with the truck. The majority of the passengers on the bus were elderly passengers.
The 66-year-old driver of the tour bus was killed, and 43 of the 48 people on the bus sustained injuries. A spokesperson for Piedmont Mountainside Hospital said that 29 people from the accident were treated and released from their facility.
The bus is owned by Greatime Getaways of Marietta and had been en route to Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel when the crash occurred. The crash is currently under investigation by the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
