How to Stay Out of a Truck's Blind Spot and Avoid a Crash

How to Stay Out of a Truck's Blind Spot and Avoid a Crash

For many reasons, large commercial trucks present a significant danger to other motorists. One such reason is the blind spots that typically exist on many of these trucks. If a car is traveling in one of a truck’s blind spots, the chances of an accident occurring are substantially increased. Drivers of other vehicles are strongly encouraged to take appropriate measures to reduce the risk of an accident occurring by staying out of a truck’s blind spots.

Nine Tips for Staying Out of a Truck’s Blind Spots

How can drivers avoid traveling in a truck’s blind spot? The following are nine helpful tips:

  1. Recognize where the blind spots typically exist on a large truck.
  2. Leave a substantial amount of space between your vehicle and the truck. A good rule of thumb is to leave approximately 20 to 25 car lengths between yourself and the truck, or a four second following distance.
  3. When weather conditions are poor, leave an even more substantial amount of time and space between your vehicle and the truck.
  4. When traveling behind a truck, keep both of the truck’s mirrors in your sight as much as possible. This includes both the left and right side mirrors. When you can see the driver’s face in these mirrors, it is much more likely that he can see you as well.
  5. If you are traveling in front of a truck, there is still a risk that you may end up in a blind spot. For this reason, it is important to leave a good amount of space between your car and the front of the truck. This is especially true when you are attempting to change lanes in front of the truck.
  6. Utilize extra caution when passing a truck, and always avoid passing a truck on its right-hand side.
  7. After passing a truck, avoiding cutting into its lane too quickly.
  8. If a truck has a right-hand turn signal turned on, do not travel on the truck’s right-hand side. This is because trucks require a wide berth in order to clear the turn.
  9. Pay careful attention to a truck’s brake lights and turn signals. If you are traveling alongside a truck and the turn signal comes on, this may be an indication that the driver does not know you are there.
