Important Safety Statistics About Motorcycle Helmet Use

Important Safety Statistics About Motorcycle Helmet Use

While driving a motorcycle is an enjoyable activity for many, it also presents significant safety risks. In order to reduce the chance of injury, motorcyclists should wear helmets approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation anytime they operate their bike. In 2013, 41 percent of fatally injured motorcycle drivers and 53 percent of passengers were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident that caused their fatalities. Fortunately, studies have shown that more motorcyclists are recognizing the importance of helmet use than ever before.

Four Statistics About Current Motorcycle Helmet Use by Motorists

According the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the following statistics show that helmet use is on the rise:

  • In 2014, the use of motorcycle helmets that are approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation increased to 64 percent of riders. This data is provided by the National Occupant Protection Use Survey.
  • Helmet use on expressways increased in an even more dramatic fashion. In 2012, only 64 percent of motorcyclists reported wearing helmets while traveling on an expressway. In 2014, that number rose to 81 percent.
  • In the southern states helmet use also showed a significant increase. About 78 percent of motorcyclists in these states reported wearing helmets while operating their motorcycles in 2014, an increase from 65 percent in 2013.
  • The type of helmet used is just as important as the overall use of the helmet. Fortunately, 2014 statistics show that the use of non-compliant motorcycle helmets fell to just five percent of motorcyclists. This represents a decrease of two percent since 2013.

This May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is promoting Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
