This week, 12 million more cars with Takata airbags have been recalled due to a problem with passenger-side airbags, according to Lawyers & Settlements. Previously, 24 million cars had been recalled for problems with driver-side and passenger-side airbags. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 10 deaths and more than 100 injuries have been linked to the recall.
On May 4th, the NHTSA voted to extend the recall to December 2019. The recall, which was first announced in November 2008, is due to the risk of airbags malfunctioning at high temperatures. Since then, the recall has been expanded several times to include multiple vehicle makes and models.
Additionally, several lawsuits have been filed as a result of the recall. As recent as March 31st of this year, a woman died after her airbag deployed too forcefully during a collision, sending debris into her neck. Lawyers for the woman believe that Takata is responsible.
