NTSB Recommends Lowering Blood-Alcohol Limit to .05%

NTSB Recommends Lowering Blood-Alcohol Limit to .05%

An Atlanta car accident lawyer at Kaufman Law recently learned that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) voted to recommend that all states lower the legal blood-alcohol content (BAC) for drivers. The NTSB is a government agency that investigates major transportation accidents, issues safety recommendations to prevent future accidents, and conducts transportation safety studies.
The NTSB recommended that all 50 states lower the legal BAC for drivers—from .08 to .05. The agency estimates that lowering the BAC could save nearly 1,000 lives each year.
The United States and Canada are among the few countries that have set their BAC limits at .08. Most countries in Europe, South America, and Australia have already lowered the legal limit that constitutes drunk driving to .05. When Australia lowered their legal BAC from .08 to .05, traffic fatalities were reduced anywhere from 5-18 percent.
The NTSB went on to point out that at a BAC of .05, some people begin to have difficulty with depth perception and other visual functions. At a BAC of .07, cognitive abilities become impaired. The potential for an accident increases as the BAC increases. The NTSB stated in their recommendation that at .05 BAC, accident risk increases by 39 percent and at .08 BAC, that risk increases by over 100 percent.
This recommendation has been met with much debate. The last move to lower BAC levels in the United States took 21 years to implement. While the NTSB does not think the recommendation will be implemented right away, they are hopeful it will help save thousands of lives in the future.
