Should Georgia Laws Be Tougher On Drunk Drivers?

Should Georgia Laws Be Tougher On Drunk Drivers?

Did you know that every 53 minutes, someone in the United States dies in an alcohol-related car crash? Chances are good that it won’t be the intoxicated driver’s first offense. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), an impaired driver will drive drunk an average of 80 times before he is caught.
In 2011, there were more than 31,000 DUI arrests in Georgia. The high number may be due in part to the fact that Georgia is one of 32 states that conducts sobriety checkpoints. Programs like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Operation Zero Tolerance” help prevent holiday DUI crashes. But they don’t stop all accidents. Despite the arrests, 277 lives were lost in Georgia due to alcohol-related crashes.
During the 2013 Fourth of July Holiday, the Georgia State Patrol made more than 16,600 traffic stops. Officers charged more than 300 drivers with driving under the influence. Yet intoxicated drivers caused 785 accidents, 374 injuries, and 11 deaths.
Are we doing enough to stop drunk drivers? MADD believes we need more than high-visibility law enforcement. They would like to see ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers with a BAC greater than .08, currently they are only required for repeat offenders.
According to MADD, this is not enough. Georgia House Bill 671 in 2014 will make ignition interlocks mandatory for all DUI offenders. Currently, only 20 states require ignition interlocks for first time drunk drivers. According to MADD data, stricter ignition interlock laws could reduce Georgia alcohol-related accident deaths by more than 30 percent.
