Study Reveals the Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Study Reveals the Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

There are some interesting facts found in the “Hurt Study of Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors” that we thought Georgia motorcycle riders should know about. The Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures was a study conducted by the University of Southern California. Funded for the most part by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), main researcher Harry Hurt investigated nearly every aspect of the 900 motorcycle accidents that took place in the Los Angeles area.
Here is some of the more interesting findings form this study:

  • Nearly 75% of the accidents studied involved a collision with a passenger car.
  • 25% of these motorcycle accidents were single vehicle accidents. They involved the motorcycle colliding with the roadway or some environmentally fixed object.
  • Only 3% of these accidents occurred because of vehicle failure.
  • In two-thirds of the multi-vehicle accidents, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcyclist’s right-of-way.
  • Most of the violations of a motorcyclist’s right-of-way took place at an intersection.
  • In 98% of motorcycle accidents, bad weather is not the cause.
  • Motorcycle riders between the ages of 16 and 24 are the most likely age groups to be involved in a motorcycle accident.
  • More than half of the riders involved in these accidents had less than five months of riding experience.
  • Lack of attention is the most common cause of a motorcycle accident, whether it is the rider or the other driver.
  • A significantly high number of riders in these accidents were without a motorcycle license, or with a revoked license.
  • A rider’s use of heavy boots, safety jacket, and gloves was effective in preventing or reducing abrasions and lacerations.
  • Injuries to the chest and head were the most deadly injuries for motorcycle accident victims.

These are just a few of the interesting findings of the Hurt Report.
