While involvement in any type of motor vehicle accident presents the risk of injury, accidents that include tractor-trailer trucks are even more likely to leave behind serious and extensive injuries to the parties involved. Unfortunately, we saw this in a frightening accident that occurred on July 16th on Georgia 20. As a result of the crash, a 15-year-old was taken by life-flight to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, and at least three others were injured.
Why Tractor-Trailer Accidents Are So Dangerous
In the recent accident occurring in Cherokee County, responders to the scene—including Cherokee County and Canton fire rescue crews—had to work hard to free the young teen from the wreckage of the crash. The boy, just 15-years-old was conscious and alert when he was freed from a Ford F-250 and had multiple injuries to his lower extremities. His grandfather, 77-years-old, was transported to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta with injuries of his own. Other vehicles involved in the accident included the tractor-trailer, driver by a 49-year-old man who was taken to North Fulton Hospital, a Toyota Avalon, and a Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the tractor-trailer was complaining of back pains after the crash. Another individual, a 43-year-old who was a passenger in the Silverado, was taken to the hospital with chest pains.
While all accidents are dangerous, it is crashes like this one that present an increased risk of injury due to the involvement of a tractor-trailer truck. These vehicles are more dangerous to motorists for many reasons, including the following:
- The truck’s sheer size is so much bigger than a car or small truck, that the force of the impact is much greater.
- It is more difficult for a truck driver to maneuver this large vehicle in order to stop or swerve to avoid a crash.
- Large trucks typically have substantial blind spots, where they cannot see other drivers on the road. This makes a collision more likely.
