COBB COUNTY, GA – One person lost their life and another was injured early Monday morning, June 17, in a crash near Kennesaw following a brief police pursuit, reports 11Alive.

The fatal wreck occurred near Frey Road and Abington Walk Northwest, in Kennesaw’s Abington Green neighborhood.

Preliminary details indicate that a Cobb County Police officer spotted a speeding BMW on Ernest Barrett Parkway and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle at about 12:17 a.m., but its driver immediately began evading the officer.

According to officials, the officer made a decision to terminate the chase due to “safety concerns,” but the fleeing driver ultimately crashed the BMW after failing to negotiate a curve in the roadway and maintain their lane. Moments after veering off the eastern shoulder, the BMW hit a concrete subdivision sign and went airborne. It vehicle collided with a group of trees before coming to a rest in the woods.

Police arrived on the scene to learn the driver had died on impact. His passenger, who suffered “non-life-threatening” injuries, was transported to a local hospital.

No further details about circumstances of the pursuit and crash have been disclosed, but an investigation remains ongoing.
