1 killed in crash involving tractor-trailer on eastbound I-20 near Austell
COBB COUNTY, GA – One person lost their life in a two-vehicle wreck Thursday morning, July 24, on Interstate 20 near Austell, reports WSB-TV Atlanta 2.
The accident happened on the eastbound lanes approaching Riverside Parkway at Exit 46. Shortly after 4:00 a.m., Cobb police had all lanes in the area shut down, which led to a traffic backup that spanned several miles long, into Douglas County.
An early investigation found that a driver in a maroon 2008 Pontiac G6 was heading down I-20 when, for reasons not yet clear, the car struck the median wall and came to a stop on the eastbound lanes. Moments later, it was hit by a white 2022 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer.
First responders pronounced the driver of the Pontiac deceased at the scene.
Neither the driver nor the passenger of the big rig were reported hurt.
By 6:50 a.m., crews had begun to re-open travel lanes.
