4 juveniles critically hurt in Bibb County crash after pursuit, PIT maneuver
BIBB COUNTY, GA – Four juveniles were hospitalized with critical injuries early last Thursday, July 11, after a police pursuit led to a crash in Bibb County, according to WSB-TV Atlanta 2.
Bibb County officials said the events unfolded when deputies were alerted to a at least one vehicle break-in in the area at about 1:30 a.m.
After locating and connecting a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer to the break-in, deputies also learned that it had been reported stolen only the day prior.
Some time after the driver of the Chevrolet failed to pull over for a traffic stop, a Georgia State Patrol trooper conducted a PIT maneuver on the fleeing vehicle. Shortly after, the vehicle, which was occupied by ten juveniles at the time, slammed into a utility pole in the area of Mercer University Drive and Burton Avenue, according to AJC.
Four children, described as two 13-year-old boys and two other boys ages 12 and 14, had to be airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in critical condition.
One other child, 11, was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening.
The driver, a 17-year-old who tried to run from the scene following the crash, was arrested and booked into Bibb County Jail. At this time, he faces a charge of “theft by receiving stolen property-auto.”
Officials said three other boys between the ages of 12 and 14 were transported to the youth detention center. They have since been charged with “theft by receiving stolen property and entering auto.”
