GSP investigates suspected DUI crash in Griffin that killed passenger
SPALDING COUNTY, GA – Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a crash early this month, June 1, in Griffin that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man, according to 11Alive.
The fatal, single-vehicle collision unfolded on a stretch of State Route 16 towards West Poplar Street, at about 10:19 p.m.
A preliminary investigation by Georgia State Patrol indicates a Ford Mustang was traveling a speeds “too fast for conditions” when its driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve. The car spun uncontrollably before colliding with a tree.
While the driver told responding troopers that they had been trying to avoid a deer at the time of the crash, drunk driving and recklessly driving were determined to have contributed to the crash.
The 21-year-old man, who was one of the three passengers in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities did not immediately confirm whether the driver, who was flown by Air Life to Grady Hospital,” is expected to face any charges or citations. No information about the conditions of the other two passengers has been made available.
