4 injured in crash after car fails to yield on GA-15 near Watkinsville
HABERSHAM COUNTY, GA – A two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon near Watkinsville left a 90-year-old Dillard woman seriously injured, according to Now Habersham.
The accident took place on a stretch of State Route 15 (U.S. Highway 441/Greensboro Highway) at Antioch Church Road, just after 12:00 p.m.
Georgia State Patrol officials said a 44-year-old Toccoa resident was driving a Buick LeSabre east on Antioch Church Road. Although she stopped at the stop sign before the highway, she failed to yield before driving into the path of a southbound Kia Soul driven by an 86-year-old Dillard resident. Moments later, the Kia collided with the Buick’s front-end.
The impact pushed the Kia across the gore point, through the northbound highway, and then onto the shoulder of road. The Buick came to rest on southbound GA-15, leaving its driver trapped. A passenger in the Buick, the driver’s 10-year-old driver, was able to exit the wreckage.
With the help of a contractor for a local utility company who happened to be in the area, the scene was secured and traffic control was in place as Habersham County first responders removed the doors of the Buick to extricate the driver.
Despite the entrapment, the driver of the Buick, her daughter, and the other driver sustained only minor injuries. The 90-year-old Dillard woman, who was a passenger in the Kia, suffered serious injuries. All occupants were transported to Gainesville’s Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Both southbound lanes of GA-15, as well as part of the northbound highway, were blocked for nearly an hour.
