Speeding, fleeing driver arrested after crashing into Laviona statue
LAVONIA, GA – A 19-year-old man was arrested after he crashed his pickup truck into an Eagle monument and then fled the scene Friday.
WYFF News Channel 4 said this single-vehicle wreck happened around 4 a.m. in the vicinity of West Avenue and Highway 17.
Details from the Lavonia Police Department showed that the driver, later identified as a Weatherford, Texas resident, was speeding when he lost control of his Chevy 2500 pickup truck, which led him to slam into the iron fence and damage it slightly, along with the surrounding lights, leaving fire marks as a result.
The police department said they were able to apprehend and arrest the driver within a matter of several minutes at the Northeast Georgia Bank parking lot, as an officer who was near the collision site on patrol discovered what happened and was quickly able to notify the department regarding what occurred. As such, they were able to catch the motorist. At this time, they have not specified what charges he would face but did confirm that he and his passenger were unharmed.
