Monroe Co. Officials Called to GA 74 Wreck With Medical Supplies
MONROE COUNTY, GA – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and other county officials were summoned to a collision on GA 74 involving a car hauling medical supplies.
Deputies told WSBTV this crash took place before 7 a.m. and said the driver was on their way to a hospital in Macon to deliver the stockpile, which included a Technetium 99M, a radioactive isotope to assist in medical imaging.
Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), the Environmental Protection Division (EPD), and other radiation clean-up crews were summoned to the scene to remove the radiation, which had a six-hour life span. Authorities said the radiation poses no safety risk to the public. Due to the clean-up procedure, authorities were left with no choice but to close the area.
At this time, officials have not announced any reopening of lanes, stated the exact cause of this crash, listed the number of occupants involved, or said if anyone was injured or had to go to the hospital.
