Alleged Teen Driver Causes Fatal Tignall Crash
TIGNALL, GA – A 17-year-old was allegedly impaired when he crashed his minivan into two trees last Friday, Feb 21., which left him critically wounded and claimed the life of his 27-year-old male passenger.
Georgia State Patrol told WRDW that the wreck, reported after 10:30 p.m., happened after the teenage driver failed to maintain a lane on Clark Station Church Road and then drifted off the road.
Once the van collided with the tree, the teenager was ejected.
Wilkes County EMS, troopers, Wilkes County deputies, and medical helicopter personnel were summoned to the scene. First responders declared the 27-year-old man from Washington dead at the scene while medical helicopter crews airlifted the teenager to WellStar MCG. There, he is recovering from critical, life-threatening wounds.
GSP suspected the teenager was intoxicated as he reeked of alcohol. At this time, they did not announce any DUI-related charges.
