Several hospitalized following red-light wreck in Demorest
DEMOREST, GA – A driver of a Toyota SUV was allegedly impaired when he ran a red light and hit a church’s Ford Econoline van, sending several people to a hospital Saturday.
This collision happened before 1:45 p.m. at the GA 365 South and Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway intersection, according to Now Habersham. Georgia State Patrol said the intoxicated driver was traveling east on Demorest-Mt while the van (from River Point Community Church) was going south.
Police said a 15-year-old boy was flown, via a medical helicopter, to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, while a Habersham EMS transported three people to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for serious, life-threatening injuries.
The Toyota SUV driver, a 64-year-old man, and his passenger were also taken to NGMC Gainesville.
Police said three other occupants from the church van were also injured but opted for self-transportation to a private hospital for their injuries.
The driver of the church van, a 29-year-old man, and the passenger were both unharmed.
Authorities arrested the 64-year-old man and booked him into Habersham County Detention Center. He was charged with DUI, failure to obey signs or control devices, and serious injury by vehicle.
