Speedy Driver Causes East Point Wreck That Sends Officers to Hospital
EAST POINT, GA – A driver of a big rig was speeding and failed to move over for patrol vehicles, leading to a crash that sent two officers to a hospital Wednesday.
This collision happened on I-285 South before Camp Creek Parkway, 11 Alive said. Prior to the wreck, the three East Point Police vehicles were in the first lane responding to an initial crash. The emergency lights were activated and the tractor-trailer driver plowed into all three vehicles and then the concrete wall.Â
East Point Police added in a detailed Facebook post that one of the officers was in his vehicle when he was struck by the truck, and another saw that the truck was coming and tried to run on foot to avoid getting struck, but ended up getting run over by his own vehicle.
The third officer also ran to get out of the way and managed not to get hit by the truck and, therefore, was able to escape injuries.
The impact of this wreck left the police cars completely destroyed, with one of the cars side by side with the truck. In addition, fuel spilled onto the road, prompting crews to shut down some lanes to clean up the spill. Some lane closures were dismissed by 10 a.m.
Authorities have since charged the semi motorist with operating a vehicle that was too fast for road conditions, failing to move over, and driving on a prohibited lane.
