Staying Safe as a Car Passenger
There is always a risk when you get into a vehicle and hit the road. Riding in the car as a passenger can pose many hazards that driving yourself does not. Here are a few ways you can ensure you stay safe while being a passenger in a vehicle:
No matter how slow you are going or how short the driving distance is, you should always wear your seatbelt in the car.
Help the Driver Navigate
Following GPS directions while driving can be challenging and especially dangerous in an unfamiliar location. Help the driver by assisting them with the navigation so they can keep their eyes on the road.
Offer To Work Dashboard Controls
A driver should always keep both hands on the steering wheel. Offer to help the driver by controlling the dashboard controls such as the radio, air, and navigation.
Try Not to Crank Up the Radio
Although a carpool karaoke session is fun and enticing, it can cause a significant distraction while driving or dancing, inhibiting the driver’s ability to control the steering wheel.
Remind the Driver to Stay Focused
Distracted driving is one of the most common reasons for car accident injuries and deaths. Distractions do not only have to be cell phones; they can also be car wrecks on the road, loud music, or even eating. Help the driver to stay focused on the road and offer to help them in any way they need.
Keep Conversations Calm
Although a car ride may seem like a good time to talk about a sensitive subject due to the privacy and time you may have, you should refrain from doing so. Sensitive topics, especially arguments, will likely get a driver worked up and possibly cause reckless driving.
