Interstate 285 is a major transportation hub for commuters, residents, and truck drivers, with thousands of drivers passing through the “Atlanta Bypass” each day. It also is home to a multitude of car wrecks, especially involving tractor trailers. In a blog we posted on April 12th involving rollover wrecks by tractor trailers, we cited a statistic of 212 rollover wrecks that occured between 2001 and 2012. A reason for such a high number is often due to flawed engineering of transition ramps on the highway. In the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “The Gridlock Guy” Mark Arum consulted with a road engineering consultant, Herman Hill, to investigate this phenomenon.
Mr. Hill believes that the ramp from I-285 to I-20 is a site for many rollover wrecks due to its flawed design. The ramp consists of a long
straightaway with a sharp turn that is blocked by trees. Drivers often make the mistake of increasing their speed on the straightway and failing to slow down before the sharp turn. Mr. Hill states that there is no sign warning drivers of this potential hazard, however the Department of Transportation is planning on installing reflective paneling and a few signs before the turn to hopefully deter tractor truck drivers from making the turn at speeds above the posted 35 mph.
